After Work Beers
Where did they go?
There used to be this magical phenomenon called after-work beers here in New Zealand and then it slowly died. Was it COVID? Or did companies finally get tired of employees staggering out onto the pavement like extras from The Walking Dead and playing real-life Frogger with buses?
Depending on the workplace, Beer O’Clock kicked off anywhere between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Fridays. The company always rolled out fancy cheese and wine I could never afford, basically a corporate mirage of luxury before I hopped on the train to my reality, a $7.50 bottle of plonk from the supermarket.
The vibe? Pure gold. Conversations swung between “We’re crushing it!” and “Let’s drown the sorrows of that deal that died harder than a baddy in a Bruce Willis film.” It was therapy with alcohol and cheese.
I look back and reminisce.
Thanks,
Kyle
